Originally developed under the working name Typeji Neue, it was first made as a practical text face for the studio’s own website, documents, and day-to-day use. Over time, that single working style gradually expanded into a full family of seven weights with matching italics.
Designed for running text, Essent aims for a neutral voice without becoming sterile. It draws on the clarity and usability associated with neo-grotesque sans serifs, but avoids a rigid or clinical tone. Stroke-end cuts follow the direction of the strokes, giving the family a slightly softer, less mechanical feel.
Although its default tone is restrained, Essent includes stylistic alternates that allow subtle shifts in character — from a straighter or more curved leg on R to alternate forms of G. This flexibility makes it useful as a daily working typeface: stable enough for extended text, but open to adjustment when a slightly different voice is needed. Renamed from Typeji Neue to Essent, the family reflects its role more clearly: an essential sans developed through repeated everyday use.
